Iggy and the Stooges (CD2, Tk11)
Search and Destroy (1973)
Iggy Pop, vocals; Scott Asheton, drums; Ron Asheton, guitar and bass

This cut was recorded one year before the group broke up. Iggy and the Stooges help lay the groundwork for punk with antics on stage that shocked most people in the early days. Iggy (born James Osterberg) would cut himself with glass or smear himself with food or raw meat on stage. Because the group was performed in the very early days of punk, they are sometimes placed in the genre of protopunk (a precursor to punk). This music was also called Detroit rock, which was a style of indie rock born of the many garage bands formed in cities and suburbs. This music defined the culture of the garage musicians. The music was raw and aggressive. Thought at first to be a fad and music without substance, punk has endured and remains the doorway into music for many young musicians around the world.
